One of American soccer’s biggest rivalries takes center stage in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference Final on Friday, as sixth-seeded LAFC2 visits No. 3 Ventura County FC with a place in the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro Cup on the line.

This playoff installment of “El Trafichico” brings the LAFC-Galaxy rivalry to the postseason at the MLS NEXT Pro level. LAFC2 enters after knocking off No. 4 Houston Dynamo 2 and No. 1 overall seed Austin FC II on the road, while Ventura County has advanced past MNUFC2 and Timbers2.

The winner will represent the Western Conference in the MLS NEXT Pro Cup during the weekend of November 6. Friday’s match, which is free to attend, kicks off at 7:00 p.m. PT, and can be watched online at OneFootball.com and MLSNEXTPro.com.

A RIVALRY WITH A CUP FINAL BERTH AT STAKE

LAFC2 and Ventura County FC are already familiar with one another. The teams met three times during the 2026 regular season and split the series evenly at 1W-1L-1D, setting up a fourth meeting with the biggest stakes yet.

LAFC2 took the first matchup, 3-2, at home in USC’s Rawlinson Stadium on May 16 behind a second-half brace from Sebastian Nava and a goal from Érick Díaz. Ventura County answered on July 18 with a 2-0 victory in Thousand Oaks, scoring twice in a five-minute span through Julian Placias and Eric Preston.

The regular-season series concluded September 5 with a 1-1 draw at LAFC2’s long-time home ground, Titan Stadium in Fullerton. Mason Vanney put Ventura County ahead in the 29th minute before Giuliano Whitchurch equalized seven minutes later. VCFC earned the extra point with a 4-2 shootout victory.

Now the rivalry shifts to Dignity Health Sports Park, with the winner advancing to the league final.

LAFC2’S ROAD RUN CONTINUES

The Black & Gold has embraced the role of road underdog throughout its first MLS NEXT Pro postseason run, but Friday’s trip will feel a little closer to home. After a pair of victories in Texas, LAFC2 returns to Southern California.

LAFC2 opened the playoffs by surviving 120 minutes against fourth-seeded Houston before advancing by winning a penalty shootout. The Black & Gold followed that with its biggest win of the season, going into Parmer Field and eliminating No. 1 overall seed Austin FC II, 1-0.

Sebastian Nava delivered the winner in the second minute of stoppage time against Austin, finishing after Tommy Mihalić forced a save from goalkeeper Erik Lauta. LAFC2 outshot the league’s top regular-season team 20-12 and allowed Austin just one shot on target.

The result gave LAFC2 consecutive road playoff victories after finishing the regular season 2W-7L-5D away from home, and moved the club within one win of its first MLS NEXT Pro Cup appearance.

SCOUTING VENTURA COUNTY

Ventura County enters Friday’s match after its best MLS NEXT Pro regular season to date, finishing third in the Western Conference with a 14W-7L-7D record for 53 points. VCFC also led the Western Conference with 58 goals during the regular season.

The Galaxy affiliate has also shown a knack for late playoff heroics. Ventura County defeated MNUFC2, 3-2, in extra time in the Conference Quarterfinals before going on the road and eliminating second-seeded Timbers2, 1-0. Arnau Vilamitjana scored the game-winner in the 84th minute against Portland after also providing the decisive goal in the previous round.

Up front, Ventura County can turn to a group that includes Julian Placias, Eric Preston, and Daniel Ittycheria. Placias and Preston each scored against LAFC2 in Ventura County’s July victory, while Ittycheria provided a late-season boost to the attack and scored in the quarterfinal win over Minnesota. Goalkeeper Sebastian Conlon anchors the defense and was also a factor against the Black & Gold in the teams’ September meeting, helping VCFC win the shootout.

BUILT FOR THIS MOMENT

LAFC2’s roster has spent the season developing together, and that continuity has shown up in the biggest matches of the year. The Black & Gold has now eliminated two higher-seeded teams on the road, first surviving 120 minutes and a penalty shootout against Houston before going into Austin and shutting out the No. 1 overall seed.

Several players who have driven the run have also taken meaningful steps within LAFC’s development pathway this season. U.S. Under-19 midfielder and LAFC Academy alumnus Jude Terry earned a first-team roster spot in the preseason. Tommy Mihalić earned a first-team contract in August, while DeCarlo Guerra, Sebastian Nava, Marius Aiyenero (above), Charlie Kosakoff, and goalkeeper Mark Gamez have all earned first-team call-ups, with Aiyenero earning his MLS debut against FC Dallas on Sept. 26.

That experience has translated into a team that looks increasingly comfortable in high-pressure moments. Goalkeeper Ethan Scally delivered two saves in the shootout against Houston, while Nava provided the 92nd-minute winner against Austin. With a place in the MLS NEXT Pro Cup at stake Friday, LAFC2 will once again lean on a young group that has continued to bond and grow as the stakes have risen.

LAFC2 CAN WIN IF

Head coach Fabian Sandoval's young squad continues dictating games on the road. Against Austin, LAFC2 generated 20 shots, limited the league’s top regular-season team to one attempt on target, and stayed patient until Nava’s late breakthrough.

That same balance will be important against a Ventura County team with multiple attacking threats and plenty of familiarity with LAFC2. The Black & Gold has created chances in all three meetings this season, including 22 shots and nine attempts on target in the July loss.

If Mihalić, Nava, Aiyenero, Kosakoff, and the rest of the LAFC2 attack can turn that volume into goals while keeping Ventura County’s front line under control, the Black & Gold will have an opportunity to extend a historic postseason run.

VENTURA COUNTY CAN WIN IF

They turn the match into the kind of tight, physical rivalry game that defined parts of the regular-season series. Ventura County has already shown it can punish LAFC2 quickly, scoring twice in five minutes in the July match, and it enters Friday with confidence after consecutive playoff wins decided by a single goal.

Placias and Preston have already found the net against LAFC2 this season, while Vilamitjana has emerged as Ventura County’s postseason difference-maker. Limiting their chances will be critical for a Black & Gold side that has allowed just two goals across its first two playoff matches.

The fourth El Trafichico of 2026 will decide the Western Conference champion, with LAFC2 and Ventura County FC separated from the MLS NEXT Pro Cup by just one win.
