LAFC2 fell to San Jose Earthquakes II on Sunday night, 3-2, at Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose, Calif. A late comeback that saw the Black & Gold score twice in the final 11 minutes was not enough, as San Jose took control in the first half and never trailed.
Kaedren Spivey of Earthquakes II opening the scoring in the 18th minute before Zachary Bohane doubled the hosts’ advantage six minutes later. LAFC2 generated chances of its own, but entered halftime trailing 2-0.
The Earthquakes added a third goal in the 68th minute when Tomo Allen finished from the center of the box to make the score 3-0. LAFC2 responded in the closing stages, as Lisandro Torres pulled one back in the 79th minute with a left-footed strike from outside the box. Adrian Sanders then headed home a Liam Lambert corner kick in the 86th minute to cut the deficit to one, but the Black & Gold could not find an equalizer.
LAFC2 finished with 14 shots, including five on target. Black & Gold goalkeeper Benjamin Failla made four saves as San Jose held a 19-14 advantage in total attempts.
With the result, LAFC2 remains on 41 points with three regular-season matches remaining. The Black & Gold sits in fifth place in the Western Conference with a six-point cushion over ninth-place North Texas SC, the first team currently outside the playoff field. Austin FC II, Timbers2, and Houston Dynamo 2 have already clinched postseason berths.
LAFC2 returns to action on Saturday, September 5, when the club hosts Ventura County at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m., and the match will be available on MLSNEXTPro.com.
