Playoff Scenarios: Where Will LAFC Finish?

As high as first and as low as fifth. That's MLS Decision Day 2018 presented by AT&T in a nutshell for LAFC.

The road to the top spot in the Western Conference seems simple enough for LAFC. The team travels to face conference leaders Sporting KC on the season's final day with just two points separating the sides. Win and LAFC finishes one point above SKC, all but securing top spot in the Western Conference.

But what about FC Dallas, level on points with LAFC heading into Sunday and taking on lowly Colorado, can they spoil the party? Or even the Seattle Sounders, just one point back of both LAFC and FC Dallas? That's where you've got to start running scenarios and numbers in your head like goal differential and goals for until you look like the GIF of Zach Galifianakis counting cards in The Hangover.

To keep the confusion to a minimum, we've compiled the scenarios, including tiebreakers, that would result in LAFC winning the Western Conference or securing a first-round bye to start the playoffs:

Los Angeles FC will clinch top seed in the Western Conference IF

  • Los Angeles FC win vs. Sporting Kansas City AND
  • FC Dallas win vs. Colorado Rapids with less than 16 goals scored than LAFC scores
