LAFC played Chivas de Guadalajara of Liga MX to a 1-1 draw at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Wednesday night in both sides' Leagues Cup 2026 opener. LAFC followed the 90-minute draw by winning the ensuing penalty shootout, 5-4, to earn an extra point.

The Black & Gold began the scoring in the 38th minute when Denis Bouanga finished a short cross from David Martínez with a one-time redirection past Chivas goalkeeper Raul Rangél.

Chivas equalized in the 42nd minute when Roberto Alvarado scored from inside the box with his own first-time finish to make the score 1-1 at halftime.

That score held up through the second 45 minutes, plus five minutes of stoppage time, at which point the match proceeded to a penalty shootout per Leagues Cup rules. After five spot kicks the shootout was knotted at four goals apiece. LAFC goalkeeper Thomas Hasal saved Chivas' sixth kick from the spot, from Luis Romo, then LAFC midfielder Jude Terry ended matters by beating Rangél to his left to give LAFC two points on the night, with Chivas departing LA with one.

LAFC returns to action on Saturday night when its Leagues Cup journey resumes with an 8:10 p.m. PT match against Toluca of Liga MX. That match will be broadcast on Apple TV, Univision/TUDN, FS1, and TSN (Canada), with local radio coverage on 710 AM ESPN, the ESPN LA app, 980 AM La Mera Mera (Spanish), and 1230 AM K-Radio (Korean).
