LAFC and the Dynamo met for the first time in July at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. Despite taking a 2-0 lead into stoppage time, LAFC had to settle for just one point after Houston scored twice in the final two minutes.
The two sides also met in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup semifinals in Houston. Down 3-1 in the second half, LAFC mounted a late comeback behind the goals of Diego Rossi. The two sides remained even after extra time. Houston was finally victorious in penalty kicks to clinch a spot in the Open Cup final.
