Playoff Stakes, Pure Energy: Why Noche LÁFC on Oct. 10 is this Month’s Can't-Miss Match

next match 16x9

It’s been a minute since LAFC played at home. By the time the Black & Gold kicks off against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BMO Stadium on October 10, it will have been a full month (43,200 minutes) since LAFC defeated Red Bull New York in front of its home supporters. Much has happened in that time. A coaching change. International competition for one-fourth of LAFC’s roster. And plans for an exciting night that celebrates LA’s Latin community.

Here’s why October 10 at BMO Stadium stands out on the city's sports and cultural calendar.

SONNY, DENIS, HUGO & CO. ARE BACK

LAFC’s star power will be on full display as record-setting goal scorer Denis Bouanga, MLS All-Star Game MVP Son Heung-Min, and World Cup champion Hugo Lloris suit up following an extended FIFA international break.

Son scored twice for South Korea in its series of home friendlies, while Denis Bouanga - LAFC’s all-time leading scorer - notched a goal for Gabon in AFCON qualifying (African Cup of Nations). Son and Bouanga, LAFC’s dynamic duo, have combined for 20 goals and 21 assists in MLS play this season, with Son tied for the league lead in the latter category (13 assists).

In 24 MLS starts this year, goalkeeper Lloris has recorded 12 clean sheets — also tied for the league lead.

Canadian World Cup heroes Mathieu Choinière and Jacob Shaffelburg, and USA U-19 midfielder Jude Terry have been representing their countries abroad, while LAFC newcomer Leo Walta scored two thrilling goals for Finland in UEFA Nations League. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder could make his LAFC debut on Saturday at the Black & Gold’s home fortress, where LAFC has a record of 8W-3L-2D at home in MLS play in 2026, and the best home record in MLS since joining the league in 2018.

THE MATCHUP

The LAFC-Vancouver fixture has elevated itself recently into a true rivalry — one that is no stranger to high drama and playoff stakes. No two MLS teams have met more often over the last five years than these two. In 2023 and 2024, these two sides faced one another 12 times across four different competitions, including the two times LAFC ousted the Caps from the MLS Cup playoffs.

Vancouver found vengeance in the 2025 Western Conference Semifinal, in which LAFC fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie the match at full-time, 2-2 – the comeback capped by a thrilling free kick from distance by Son in stoppage time. After 30 minutes of extra time, LAFC finally fell on penalty kicks in one of the best MLS matches of 2025.

LAFC is 12W-7L-8D against Vancouver in all competitions, but the teams are perfectly split (6W-6L-6D each) in MLS regular-season play.

Two months ago at BC Place, the clubs drew 1-1, with Son scoring in transition in the first half (assisted by Bouanga) and Thomas Müller converting a second-half penalty for Vancouver.

A NEW ERA

Former head coach Marc Dos Santos was part of LAFC’s first technical staff in 2018, served the club over more than five seasons as an assistant coach and head coach, and this year led LAFC to the Concacaf Champions Cup Semifinals and a new MLS record for clean sheets to start a season. Now it’s time to go further.

After careful consideration, LAFC parted ways with Dos Santos in late September, and days later named Xavi Tamarit as its interim coach. Tamarit (above), whose coaching experience includes stops in the English Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, and Argentina’s top division, is tasked with pushing one of Major League Soccer’s most talented rosters into its final six regular-season matches and into the MLS Cup Playoffs, with renewed energy.

New leader, same standard. A celebration of LA’s Latin culture. A grudge match between two favorites to represent the West in the MLS Cup final.

The stage is set, the stakes are clear. Saturday can't come soon enough.
