The 2019 MLS regular season comes to a close on Sunday.
LAFC plays host to the Colorado Rapids in a match that means little for the stands but possibly everything to history.
With three points, LAFC would be set the all-time points record for a season with 72. The all-time goals scored in a season record is also in play. LAFC is just three goals shy of tying that mark. And from an individual perspective, Carlos Vela is one goal away from setting the new record for goals by a player in a season.
So even though the Supporters' Shield and home-field advantage have already been secured, there's still plenty to play for.
Here are the Toyota Keys to the Match for LAFC's final home match of the regular season:
Go For It
Between the final match of the season and LAFC's first playoff contest, there's nearly a three-week break.
There's nothing to hold back for. LAFC accomplished its big goals with matches to spare. Now it's time to strive for something really special.
Bob Bradley has told his team that seasons like this don't happen often. The players need to enjoy the challenge of striving for something that no other MLS side has done.
Continue The Good Habits
With Carlos Vela sitting on 31 goals this season, there might be some temptation to look for him at every opportunity.
The fact of the matter is that Vela got to that point playing within the system that's resulted in 82 goals so far this season. He's the team's leading scorer but that doesn't mean it all has to flow to him.
LAFC should be focused on creating the advantages necessary and playing the final pass as it comes. If the Black & Gold play in the right ways, attacking the right spaces, and playing the right passes, there's a good chance Vela is on the end of one of those. And it'll be a confidence boost headed into the 2019 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.
Stay Sharp On Set Pieces
The best way to defend set pieces is not to give them up. But inevitably, you're going to have to defend a dangerous opportunity either from a corner or free kick.
Colorado is one of the best teams in the league at set pieces. They've gone on a run of fives wins in their last six and many of the goals in that time have come from set pieces. In this match, LAFC needs to treat any defensive set-piece opportunities as prep for the playoffs. When matches get tight and advantages are limited, set pieces can decide knockout matches. The Rapids are a good primer heading into the Cup run.
