LAFC proved themselves in the first two rounds of the Open Cup in 2019, scoring three goals on each opponent, but ultimately fell short in the quarterfinals to a familiar foe.

Two seasons in the U.S. Open Cup, two consecutive quarterfinal appearances at home against the Portland Timbers. In 2018, LAFC held off the Timbers in a 3-2 victory to advance to the first semifinal in Club history. That match was contentious, with plenty of intrigue on and off the pitch. Tempers flared, tackles flew, and the disdain was on full display. 2019 was no different, except this time the Timbers held LAFC to only one shot on goal. It was choppy. Opportunities were at a premium. It was physical throughout. They set the tone and LAFC weren't able to wrestle control back from them.
