With the group-stage standings taking shape, here’s everything that World Cup followers need to know about LAFC's participating players, the Black & Gold’s favorite national teams, and local events in and around the city.
UNITED STATES
USMNT’s 4-1 win over Paraguay and 2-0 win over Australia secured first place in Group B and a spot in the knockout stage. The Americans' final group-stage game is on Thursday against Türkiye at Los Angeles Stadium [SoFi Stadium].Â
Malik Tillman, the younger brother of LAFC midfielder Timmy Tillman (who played for USMNT in 2024 and 2025), has not come off the field for the U.S., playing all 180 minutes in midfield in the Americans’ two matches.
CANADA
Canada and its three LAFC players have a 99 percent chance of advancing to the knockout stage after solid performances against Bosnia and Herzegovina (1-1 draw) and Qatar (6-0 win). A win or draw against Switzerland on Wednesday would make Canada the Group B winners.
Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio has captained Canada and played all 90 minutes in both matches, leading the team with 180 touches. Mathieu Choinière has yet to appear for Canada in the tournament.
Winger-wingback Jacob Shaffelburg (below) sent an acrobatic shot toward goal against Qatar that was deflected in by a Qatari defender for an own goal. Shaffelburg has played 68 total minutes in Canada’s two matches thus far.
SOUTH KOREA
Son Heung-Min and the Taeguk Warriors will advance to the Round of 32 if they earn at least a point against South Africa in Guadalupe, Mexico, on Wednesday. If South Korea loses, they can still advance - as long as Mexico is not defeated on its home turf by Czechia, a highly unlikely result.
Son has played 126 minutes thus far for South Korea and leads the team in shots (6).
MEXICO
Mexico, the birthplace of Carlos Vela (LAFC's longtime captain, current co-owner and Club Ambassador, and a veteran of two World Cups) won Group A by defeating Son and South Korea on Thursday, 1-0.
For the first time in World Cup history, Mexico will play its third group-stage match knowing it has already won its group.Â
