LAFC visits BC Place in Vancouver on Saturday evening with first place in the Western Conference on the line.
The stakes are similar to what they were the last time LAFC met the Vancouver Whitecaps eight months ago in the Western Conference Semifinal, when LAFC fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie the match at full-time, kept pushing against a shorthanded Caps side through 30 minutes of extra time, and finally fell on penalty kicks in one of the best MLS matches of 2025.
This time around, LAFC and Vancouver are tied on points atop the West along with San Jose (33 points each); and can leave Saturday’s match in first place and create some daylight between itself and the other two as the regular season enters its second half. (San Jose travels to FC Cincinnati Saturday evening.)
“It's a huge game,” said LAFC forward Tyler Boyd. “If we can get three points, it keeps them down, puts us up. They have games in hand … you need to make a push at this part of the season so you can host games in the playoffs. That's what our goal is.”
FORM CHECK
LAFC has emerged from the World Cup break in world-class form, winning all three matches and outscoring opponents 10-1. Forwards Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-Min have been the headliners, combining for seven goals and two assists in those three wins, while the Black & Gold back line, supported by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (league-best 10 clean sheets) and its backtracking midfielders and wingers, have conceded a single goal – on a deflected shot by Real Salt Lake in the waning moments of a 3-1 win.
Son’s scorching form continued through his first MLS All-Star Game, where he scored twice and walked away with the MVP trophy following the MLS All-Stars’ 4-3 win over the Liga MX All-Stars.
“We are in a good moment, in a confident moment,” LAFC head coach Marc Dos Santos said. “We know the quality that Vancouver has. And we know that to win there or get a good result there we're going to have to be at our very best. We're ready for it, and this week has helped us get ready for it.”

RETURNING HOME
LAFC midfielder Mathieu Choinère (above) and forward Jacob Shaffelburg played at BC Place just five weeks ago, in the FIFA World Cup as members of the Canadian National Team.
Canada - which went on to reach the Round of 16 - played two World Cup group-stage matches at BC Place, defeating Qatar 6-0 and falling to eventual quarterfinalists Switzerland, 2-1.
Another World Cup player, Sebastian Berhalter of the United States, departed the Whitecaps roster after the World Cup when he was transferred to Middlesbrough of the English Championship. A member of the 2025 MLS Best XI squad, Berhalter was a pivotal piece in the Caps recent resurgence under head coach Jesper Sørensen and will be difficult to replace.
“Vancouver is a very good collective team,” Dos Santos said. “They're very energetic. They have a young team, they press really well, they have some players with very good experience and quality like [Thomas] Müller, Ryan Gauld, Brian White. I know them very well.
“Berhalter was important for them, and I'm sure it's a big loss for them, but what I know about them is they're already thinking about how they're gonna replace him, and with who.”
TURF WAR
Berhalter’s departure isn't the only big change in Vancouver. BC Place has already removed the grass that was installed for this summer’s FIFA World Cup, and re-laid the artificial turf that has been its playing surface for years.
“We are a multipurpose stadium that needs to serve everyone,” Chris May, the stadium’s general manager, told The Province. “So I would love to keep that grass afterwards. I mean, just for the smell alone … you walk into the building and you’d say: ‘Wow, B.C. Place smells fresh!’ It’s nice, but we have to balance that with the need to continue driving the business, and what that means across the board.”
The Whitecaps have not played at BC Place in more than three months – since their April 25 win over the Colorado Rapids. The Caps have played seven MLS matches since then, all on the road, going 2W-2L-3D in that span. Their two matches since the World Cup (a 4-3 road loss to FC Cincinnati and a 0-0 draw in Minnesota) were played without Berhalter.
“It’s their first game coming back in Vancouver after the ‘Canadian Red Sea’ that we saw during the World Cup,” Dos Santos observed. “I think there's going to be a lot of excitement, close to a full stadium I believe, so it's gonna be hard. We have to go there with the same level of focus and organization that we've shown.”
THE SERIES
No two MLS teams have met more often over the last five years than these two. In 2023 and 2024 alone, these two sides faced one another 12 times across four different competitions.
Overall, LAFC has a firm grip on the series lead, with a record of 12W-7L-7D in all competitions, including a 10W-7W-6D mark in MLS regular-season and playoff matches. The Black & Gold has outscored the Whitecaps 53-31 across all competitions. Since the Whitecaps hired head coach Jesper Sørensen prior to the 2025 season, Vancouver owns a 1W-0L-2D mark against LAFC, with a 5-4 edge in goals scored.
LAFC WILL WIN IF
It scores the first goal. LAFC has an unblemished 14W-0L-0D record in 2026 when scoring the opening goal, including a 10W-0L-0D mark in MLS play. That success stems not just from its early attacking prowess, but from the goalkeeping of Hugo Lloris, who on several occasions has turned away early chances from the opposition and allowed LAFC to get a 1-0 lead.
Lloris’ clean sheet against SKC last weekend was the 33rd of his career in MLS regular-season play. No goalkeeper has registered more shutouts since the beginning of 2024 (when Lloris joined LAFC), and Lloris is the only goalkeeper to record three straight seasons of double-digit shutouts over the last three years.
He has registered two clean sheets against Vancouver in his seven appearances against the Caps.
WHITECAPS CAN WIN IF
They slow down Bouanga (above). The perennial Golden Boot candidate has scored 10 goals in 17 matches this season, including four in his last three, putting him on pace to extend his MLS record of three straight 20-goal seasons, to four.
Bouanga has scored nine career goals against Vancouver, more than he’s scored against any other club aside from the Galaxy (11) and San Jose (10).
