LAFC fell to the Colorado Rapids 1-0 on Wednesday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. The result places LAFC’s record at 10W-7L-4D in league play, and the club remains in the top five of the MLS Western Conference standings.
Starting a rotated eleven that included goalkeeper Cabral Carter making his first career MLS start, and a front line of Tyler Boyd, Jeremy Ebobisse, and Jacob Shaffelburg, LAFC conceded the game’s first goal when a free kick from Colorado’s Youssef Maziz deflected off the foot of Ebobisse for an own goal in the 22nd minute, giving the Rapids a 1-0 lead that would hold up over the remaining 68-plus minutes.
In the 43rd minute, Colorado sought to double its lead from the penalty spot after forward Rafael Navarro was ruled to have drawn a foul in the 18-yard box. But Navarro’s penalty kick was batted away by Carter, a 22-year-old LA native and LAFC Academy product who dove decisively to his left. Carter made another save at full stretch on a sharp drive from distance from Maziz at the 45’+2 mark, keeping LAFC within 1-0 at halftime.
In the 57th minute, three rapid-fire shots from inside the area by Shaffelburg, Ebobisse, and Eddie Segura were blocked and eventually cleared to keep the Rapids’ 1-0 lead safe. The 64th-minute additions of star forwards Son Heung-Min and Denis Bouanga could not produce an equalizer for the visitors before the full-time whistle.
LAFC returns to BMO Stadium this Saturday, August 22, when the club hosts the Portland Timbers. That match is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on Apple TV, as well as Coupang Play and SPOTV for fans in Korea. Local radio coverage will be available on 710 AM ESPN, the ESPN LA app, KYPA 1230 AM (Korean), and 980 AM La Mera Mera (Spanish).
