A second-half stoppage time goal by Eddie Segura gave LAFC a 1-0 win over Toluca in Leagues Cup at BMO Stadium on Saturday night. The match was tied 0-0 heading into stoppage time and appeared to be headed toward penalties, only for Segura to curl a right-footed shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the box, giving LAFC the win over the reigning Concacaf Champions Cup winners.
With the victory, LAFC now has five points in Phase One of Leagues Cup with one game still to play. The club is now in fifth place in the MLS table, one point behind a group of four teams that are level on six points. The top four teams in both the MLS and Liga MX standings will advance to the Leagues Cup Quarterfinals.
Toluca outshot LAFC 15-9 and had four shots on target to three for the Black & Gold. But it was LAFC that came closest to opening the scoring in the first half with Mathieu Choinière hitting the post with a long range strike in the 38th minute and Denis Bouanga denied from close range by Toluca goalkeeper Hugo González just before the intermission.
After the break, neither side was able to create clear chances until Segura stepped up. Jacob Shaffelburg, who had entered the game in the 84th minute, was able to get around his defender on the left wing and fire a cross into the box. A Toluca defender dove in to head the ball away, but it went only as far as 58th-minute substitute Segura, who took one touch to settle the ball before hitting a shot that beat the dive of González and nestled into the corner of the net, giving LAFC a 1-0 win.
The Black & Gold will play its final game in Phase One of Leagues Cup on Wednesday, August 12, against Querétaro at BMO Stadium. That match is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on Apple TV. Local radio coverage will be available on 710 AM ESPN, the ESPN LA app (English), 980 AM La Mera Mera (Spanish), and KYPA 1230 AM (Korean).
